Getting there and settling in

We are finally on our way after well over a year of preparation. It also took the outstanding support by lots of people here at Cal Poly, at San Luis Obispo High School and at home in Germany including my teams and my collegues at HdM, at Nathan's High School in Germany and many more e.g. friend and our tennants who are e.g. looking after the house at home.

Checking in at Stuttgart Airport with nine pieces of luggage. Is everything necessary? Probably not, but we're packing for three seasons, so we've brought our skis, our inflatable kayak, camping gear and other potentially useful items.

We were fortunate to book the flights using miles, which made the usually expensive business class affordable. The extra allowance was a bonus, allowing for more carry-on luggage and additional sports equipment for the skis and kayak.

Getting ready to board the Swiss 777-300ER, our home for the next 10 hours...

Getting ready for the flight. I basically slept, Nathan is now up-to-date with all the recent movies.

Approaching SFO-airport above Silicon Valley. The left corner is Moffet-Field with the hangars for the airships. Overall, it is amazing how green California currently is after a wet winter.

Finally we cleared immigration and customs. We are on a J1/J2 visum, but thanks to all the support we had our documents togehter.

We spent the night in San Mateo since we didn't want to drive another 3 hours after that long flight. For dinner we went to one of my Silicon Valley favorites, Buck's of Woodside

This is a fun picture, last time Nathan was there was almost 6 years ago!

Next morning, driving towards San Luis Obispo. With the house available at 3pm we had time for a stop at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View.

Our car for the next 11 weeks. At home we have gone electric, but with some roadtrips planned this might be the easier solution. We were lucky, I politely asked if they have a 4WD and a car which will not need a tune-up for the next 6.000 miles (which happened to us last summer...) and they gave us this upgrade which is an all-new car with less than 800 miles.

A quick stop at the In-N-Out-Burger in Atascadero, about 20 Minutes before reaching San Luis Obispo SLO). Nathan was waiting for his favorite burgers.

Our home until June. We were lucky to find this place on AirBnB, a few blocks from downtown in a quiet neighborhood.

The house from the front on our return from the bookstore.

The upper deck, already my favorite place in the house.

Our office at home. And yes, this is the sleep-couch which can host visitors!
