Carmel, Monterey and Santa Cruz

Highway 1 is still closed, but there were a few things on our bucket list north of San Luis Obispo.

Thus, last weekend we did a small roadtrip starting in Carmel, the even nicer side on the Monterey Penninsula.

Even though this is - if I counted right - my 30th trip to California

there is still a lot  I haven't seen.

Golf courses next to the spectacular beaches like Pebble Beach..

is at least parts of the 17 Mile Drive

This explains the rugged coast line betwenn Monterey and San Luis Obispo.

In a way this drive is also Highway 1 in a nutshell

and more or less what the next 100 miles south would look like if they weren't closed

More views towards the pacific

and the beaches

This is stop 11

The Lone Cypress

This is a list of all the stops

The Ghost Trees

at Pescadero Point.

The overview of the drive.

Next Stop Monterey, the old custom house

from the time when the area was still Mexican

a view from

and towards the Wharf.

We walked further to Cannery Row

Which is actually the old canned food factory depicted by Steinbeck's novel "Cannery Row"

From there we drove further north to Santa Cruz

Fun fact: this is the place someone named O'Neill invented the wetsuit

which makes sense since the water is fairly cold for most of the coast.

The Beach

next to the board walk.

Some trusting pelicans

and then Nathan's decision to take a swim

and the water here was slightly warmer

Making it the first swim for the season

while sunset was approaching.

Frome here we headed off to Hollister where we spent the night so we could visit the Pinnacles National Park the next morning.

And some videos

from the beach in Santa Cruz
