Open House and TEDx


Our third weekend in California and the first weekend we didn't travel anywhere.



There was enough happening with the Open House at Cal Poly and after a nice week the weather forecast was rather rainy. 


It started with the Farmers' market on Thursday, but this team also many student organisation had set up their booths including some of my students and also thsi drag racing-team. 


Friday was the day for the newly admitted students and our departement head Colleen touring the around including the beautiful Shakespear Press museum in the basement of the Graphik Communication building, but the museum is another blog post. 


Saturday was the actual open house, unfortunately very rainy...


...but stil a good opportunity to see the many things happeing on campus. 




Sunday we attended a TEDx conference on campus


First time Nathan came along and he enjoyed it... 


With things a little more quiet it was also a good opportunity to finally shop for a Cal Poly Hoodie. 


After the TEDx conference the rain was finally history

I wouldn't call it a take-over, but most of those pictures are from Nathan.  They are from San Luis Obispo (or SLO) High where he was a Ninth Grader ("Freshmann"). I will resolve this mystery: those are the "cell phone pockets" which you will find in each classroom. Students have to put their smartphone into those pockets, failing to do so will get the students a "tardy". We got several of those, but usually for Nathan being 1 minute late to class. Parents will know immediately because you will get a message to your cellphone.  Those are pictures from the food at the cafeteria which is - free! The only rule: you will get the food after you have picked something fresh, but with strawberries and more this is easy.  "Tigers" is the name of the sports team. In and around SLO V: Dallidet Adobe and Gardens, above the P and Montaña de Oro State Park

There were still a few things left on the bucket list and with school finishing earlier due to finals we were acutally able to do some smaller tours in the aftenoon.  That was still on Sunday, the Dallidet Adobe. This house was basically outside San Luis Obispo and used by the Dallidet family for over a 100 years from the 1850s until the 1950s when it was donated to the city.  It is only open on Sundays and that is the reason we were only able to look at it last weekend.  This is one of the original horse-drwan street cars from San Luis Obiso.  The next stop on that Sunday was the history museum of SLO. Tipps für Kalifornien

In letzter Zeit hatte ich ein paar Fragen nach Tipps für Kalifornien, sowohl im Hinblick auf einen Urlaub wie eben auch einen längeren Aufenthalt. Ich habe das mal zusammengeschrieben bzw. aus ein paar Mails auch wieder rauskopiert. Das sind in erster Linien Tipps für Urlaubsreisen, aber ich stelle auch noch ein paar Hinweise für einen Lehr- und Forschungsaufenthalt zusammen.  Telefon:  Ohne Datentarif geht es eigentlich nicht mehr. Bereits bei der Landung sollte man ein funktionsfähiges Handy haben, sonst wird ein Transfer mit UBER, das Finden des Hotel-Shuttles oder das elektronische Einchecken für den Mietwagen sehr kompliziert bis unmöglich. Klassisches Roaming kann ein Vermögen kosten und Vodafone bucht 10 Euro am Tag ab, wenn man das Handy auch nur kurz nutzt und bei 5G gibt es das Phänomen des Geisterroamings , d.h. trotz abgeschalteter Daten kann es eben doch dazu kommen, weil irgendwelche Datenpakete beim Anmelden im Netz ausgetauscht werden.
