Anacapa Island in the Channel Islands National Park

Sunday was our third and finally successful attempt to visit one of the Channel Islands.

The islands are in front of the coast of Santa Barbara.

The sea can be rough and that was the reason the first to trips we booked got cancelled on short notice. This time the ocean was much smoother and we actually saw dolphins.

Approaching Anacapa Island, the closest to the mainland.

There is no real harbour at Anacapa Island so you basically deboard the boat and climb the rock follwing some stairs.

At this time of the year the island is host to wildflowers and

seagulls, which are nesting everywhere

so you have to watch out not to accidentially step on some eggs.

It is actually three connected islands with only the firs one being accessible.

So we did some hiking and it is bascially in either direction.

Besides seagulls it is also sea lions who take advantage of the safety of the island.

One of the bravest seagulls nesting right at the edge

with no fears of humans closeby.

We continued our hike with spectacular views

with a small rest on the campground.

Here the offspring already hatched.

More of the great views

with the other parts of Anacapa Island and the much bigger Santa Cruz Island further back.

We continued our hike

towards the light-house

with more hatched chicks

Approaching the lighhouse, the last one to be built on the west coast.

Heading back towards the "harbour"

and getting ready to leave the island.

Before leaving they actually go around the island

where you can also sea pelicans

while making sure that everyone is actually on board

since you would otherwise be stuck on that island for several days.

This picutre is a few more sea lions in the harbour of Oxnard.

From there we headed back with a short stop

at the mission of Santa Barbara.
